The Dispossessed
A society is divided into two factions, one capitalist on the main planet and one anarchist on the moon. A physicist from the anarchist society travels to the capitalist planet to share his discoveries. From there, the contrast between the two factions is analyzed through his perspective.
The cold war analogy is pretty obvious, and if you watch/read science fiction, you'll find the same premise in multiple works. What stands out to me are the characters: from the protagonist to the minor ones, each has a full personality, in contrast to the one-dimensional people you can find in standard sci-fi. Also, there is a cameo by us, the humans, that is just wonderful.
The Hair-Carpet Weavers
On an alien planet, people have been weaving beautiful carpets from the hair of women. The whole society is built on the making of carpets. The book starts there, and little by little, we begin to understand the reasons behind the whole thing.
I bought the books just from the weird name and the amazing cover (edition from Penguin Classics—science fiction). Sometimes I like to go blind into a book and hope for the best. And this time I got the jackpot. This book is such a wild ride, with so many fun twists, amazing pacing, and original world-building. In the back of the book, at the end of the premise, it says this: “…explores the absurdity of work and of life itself,” and I think is spot on.
